Acai powder is one of my favorite superfood powders out there. I can seriously go through a 4oz bag in less than a week. It goes great in yogurt smoothies and snacks; however, my ultimate favorite is in a latte or in this acai banana milkshake.
The funny thing about acai is that it is mainly touted for its ability to help with weight loss. As a matter of fact, one time I was at a health food store and when I couldn’t find it I asked the man if it was a product that they carried. He just gave me a look-over and asked: “What do you need acai powder for? It’s for weight loss and you clearly don’t need to lose any.” I just gave him a dirty look and went on my way. After this I felt silly buying it, but since I enjoyed it so much I continued to take it no matter what others thought of me. Plus, it made me feel stronger and being the weakling that I am, I just couldn’t leave it on the shelves.
Since then, I have discovered that there are a lot more benefits of acai powder than just weight loss. The freeze dried powder, which is what I get, is loaded with antioxidants, omega fatty acids and amino acids.
Antioxidants help to eliminate free radicals in the body that attack and weaken the body at a cellular level. As a result of this one substance alone, acai powder can help to protect the body against premature aging of both the mind and body, as well as against many diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, eye diseases, dementia and arthritis.
Omega 3 fatty acids are also extremely good for mental health and many physical health issues as well. They help to reduce inflammation in muscles and other tissues throughout the body.
As for amino acids, they are coined as the “building blocks” for protein. Among many benefits, they basically help to build muscle tissue in order to maintain a strong and healthy body.
