Most fruits and vegetables are easily juiced by sending them through a juicing machine. To juice a pomegranate, however, is a bit trickier because you don’t want to crush the bitter seeds during the juicing process. The key to juicing a pomegranate is to squish the seeds just hard enough in order to release the juice without crushing the bitter pit.
There are several ways to go about juicing the seeds. The first step is to open the pomegranate and remove the seeds from the compartments inside the thick outer shell. Next, put a small amount of seeds into a blender (or magic bullet), and give them a few short pulses in order to release the juice from the seed. A few gentle pulses will not break the seeds but is enough to release the juice.
Once the juice is released, pour the mixture through a nut milk bag or a fine sieve to separate the seeds from the juice. Gently press the seeds in order to get all the valuable juice out.
Another, and perhaps more convenient way to juice a pomegranate is to run the seeds through a food mill. The mill is able to separate the juice from the seeds in one step, which can save you both time and energy. It gently crushes the seeds to release the juice into another container, while the bitter seeds are collected inside the mill.
Fresh pomegranate juice can be consumed as is or mixed in with other juices. It can also be used as a marinade or in a salad dressing. Instead of juicing the seeds, you can add them to a variety of salads, including both fruit and vegetable salads, guacamoles, and many other raw dishes.
