The pomegranate is a unique fruit that grows in the tropical regions of the world. It has a tough outer rind that protects the valuable and juicy pomegranate seeds, also known as arils. Getting at the arils can be a little tricky because they are held in place by the pith and are encased by another protective layer, referred to as the membrane. It takes a bit of practice, but after you open a pomegranate a few times it gets much easier.
Pomegranate juice is high in antioxidants, which help to clean the body at a deep cellular level in order to prevent a number of degenerative diseases. It helps to enhance brain functions, such as memory and cognitive skills, and also increases energy levels. The juice is also great for weight loss because it helps to remove the toxins that often make it impossible to lose weight.
The first step in opening a pomegranate is to cut both ends off. You want to cut in just far enough in order to cut away the outer rind, but not too far so that you cut into the seeds. If you do, it’s okay, but you want to preserve as much of the nutrient-rich juice as you can.
Next, take the knife and score the outer edge of the pomegranate. Start at the top or the bottom and work your way all around the rind. You can do this once or twice more in order to make it easy to break the pomegranate open.
Once you have scored the rind, take the pomegranate in both hands and gently break it apart along the score lines.
Now it is time to peel away the membrane and break the seeds away from the pith. You will find that it is easier if you break it into smaller pieces as you go.
You will also find that the seeds are quite juicy and will spatter if you are not careful. One way to protect yourself and the counter is to go about it slowly. You can also do it in a bowl of water if you don’t mind losing some of the valuable juice.
Once the seeds are removed, you can eat them as they are or toss them in your fruit salads.
You can also juice the pomegranate seeds for a refreshing drink. Fresh pomegranate juice goes well with a variety of juices, such as pineapple, orange and mango. You can also mix it with nut milk and many superfood powders for even more nutrition.
